WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A HISPANIC-SERVING INSTITUTION? (HSI)

San Diego City College is proud to be formally designated a Hispanic-
Serving Institution (HSI) by the United States Department of Education.
The purpose of the HSI is to expand educational opportunities and
improve the academic attainment of Hispanic and low-income students,
and to expand and enhance the academic offerings, program quality, and
institutional stability of colleges and universities that are educating the
majority of Hispanic college students. As an HSI, San Diego City College, is
committed to student success, educational equity and social justice.

Students Uplifted By Instructional Reform (iSUBIR!)

The purpose of the Title V SUBIR Grant is to increase the number and proportion of high-need students who persist in and complete college. SUBIR will improve retention and success of Latinx students and economically disadvantaged students through course redesign, professional development,  showcasing of diversity and inclusivity and student services initiatives. The SUBIR Grant focuses on the following areas: Professional Development, Course Redesign, Intercultural Centers, Student Support and a Summer Transition Program (Jump Start).

  • SUBIR Intercultural Centers
  • Summer Jump Start Program
Title V capitalizes on a number of existing resources and is supported by all areas at San Diego City College. The college is committed to providing the support and resources to ensure the success and sustainability of Title V initiatives.

The four SUBIR Intercultural Centers; AH 200a, L-207, M-205, and S-401 are located across the City College Campus. Please see map below for reference. We are an Intercultural Center inclusive of all students designed to support student on-campus engagement and overseen by the Dean of Student Equity.

The SUBIR Intercultural Centers serve four functions:

1. Resource Center

We provide a space for students to come and study independently or in study groups or hang out between classes during hours of operation. Students also have access to campus resources such as peer mentoring, tutoring, etc., and technology in which they can collaboratively showcase presentations and work on documents simultaneously in groups.

2. SUBIR Dreamer Resource Center

At the SUBIR Dreamer Resource Center, the goal is to help students of all backgrounds overcome the unique challenges that get in the way of achieving academic, personal and professional excellence. By providing access to a range of programs, resources, counseling appointments, and legal services.

3. Presentations & Discussion

The Intercultural Centers' will offer a space where round table discussions, presentations, and other events focused on academic support, GRIT, leadership development, and socio-cultural experience.

4. Meeting Place

The Intercultural Centers'  provide a meeting place for on- campus active organizations/clubs, and student's whose goals are consistent with the center's mission.

The Title V Grant provides Professional Development and course redesign in order to expand the use of pedagogical techniques that are recognized as promoting student success.

Year 2: Basic Skills Math, PG 130

Year 3: Math 95, 104, 116, 119 and English 101, 205, PG 145

Year 4: BIO 107, SOC 101, HEALTH 101, PSYC 101, HIS 109, CHIC 141A

Title V redesigned courses are subject to change.
Piloting of courses will occur the year following redesign.
