The Personal Growth program is designed for all students at San Diego City College. The primary focus of the program is to help you develop critical thinking skills in relation to career, academic and life-planning goals.  You are exposed to a variety of personal and career assessment instruments which lead to greater self-awareness in relation to the decision making process in career and educational planning. You will become well versed in learning styles and theories, multicultural issues, and academic, community and campus resources.

COURSES OFFERED

PERG 110:  INTRODUCTION TO COLLEGE - 1.5 units

This course introduces the knowledge and skills necessary to survive and thrive during the first year in college.  Students examine higher education structures, the opportunities and resources available, and the requirements to successfully complete a certificate, degree and transfer.  Emphasis is placed on the transition to college learning and college life, self-reflection and self-advocacy, goal setting, academic policies, major selection and educational planning.  Students develop and apply critical analysis skills, information literacy, and successful attitudes and behaviors in joining a college community.  This course is intended for first time and re-entry college students.  This course counts as an elective for the Associate's degree, and transfers as an elective to the California State University and to the University of California. 

 

PERG 120:  COLLEGE SUCCESS & LIFELONG LEARNING - 3 units

This course will teach you success strategies to enhance your academic and lifelong learning skills. You will explore topics such as motivation and attitudes, values, goal setting, decision-making processes, critical and creative thinking, personal health topics, interpersonal communication, developmental psychology, and learning and personality theories, as well as other techniques for maximizing your ability to succeed as lifelong learners. You will apply these topics as they relate to your self-development and acquire strategies to effectively deal with issues in you personal lives and educational and career plans.  This course counts as an elective for the Associate's degree, fulfills a general education requirement (Area E) for transfer to the California State University, and transfers as an elective to the University of California. 


PERG 130:  CAREER & LIFE PLANNING - 3 units

This course is designed for students interested in self-exploration, career transitions and career-life planning in order to achieve success in a diverse society. Various assessments are utilized through a systematic approach to career development by examining values, interests, skills, and personality types. Other topics include life roles, personal self-management, decision-making and goal-setting throughout the life span. This course counts as an elective for the Associate's degree, fulfills a general education requirement (Area E) for transfer to the California State University, and transfers as an elective to the University of California (see a Counselor for transfer unit limitations).

 

PERG 140:  LIFE SKILLS & PERSONAL ADJUSTMENT - 3 units

This course is designed for students who want to learn and acquire effective ways for developing their emotional, social, educational, and professional life skills. This course is a practical study of the principles and application of strategies that assist in the development of coping and life skills. Topics include self-esteem and compassion, self-discipline, self-responsibility, self-assertion, and living a consciously balanced life in pursuit of defined educational, career, and life goals. This course counts as an elective for the Associate's degree and fulfills a general education requirement (Area E) for transfer to the California State University.  It DOES NOT transfer to the University of California.

PERG 160:  STRESS MANAGEMENT & WELL-BEING IN THE MODERN WORLD - 3 units

This course is an opportunity to explore, assess, and evaluate stress management and holistic well-being across the lifespan.  The course explores the mind-body relationship (psychophysiology) of stress, stressors across the lifespan, coping skills, and interventions.  Emphasis is placed on managing stress and anxiety in the modern world.  Topics include well-being in relation to career, physical and mental health, finances, relationships, and community connection.  This course is designed for students seeking help with stress management, holistic well-being, and life balance.  This course counts as an elective for the Associate's degree and fulfills a general education requirement (Area E) for transfer to the California State University.  It DOES NOT transfer to the University of California.
