Professional Development (PD) funding is available to all faculty and staff to allow for equitable campus activities which contribute to our professional learning and growth, while improving the student experience at City College. The funds allocated from various budgets, and sources as well as funding amounts may vary each academic year. 

See the "Funding Priorities" section below to see which funding source(s) best align with the activity for which you are requesting money.

Application Cycle and Deadlines

Applications requesting professional development funding are due two (2) days before the Funding Request Workgroup (a sub-group of the Professional Development Advisory Committee) meetings. The 2020-2021 schedule is below.

It is recommended that applications be submitted the semester prior to the planned activity or event attendance. We may consider requests for funding needed in the current semester if submitted at the beginning of the same semester. For example:

  • If funding is needed for an event or travel in Spring, submit the request sometime in the preceding Fall semester.
  • If funding is needed in late Fall, submit the request before the first PDAC meeting of the semester, or anytime in the previous semester.

Application Process/Checklist

Please note that travel is prioritized for mandatory conferences, those who are presenting, and for those who have not previously attended the conference for which they are requesting funds.

  1. Review the "Funding Priorities" chart (see below) to understand the priorities and limitations of each grant, and choose which grant(s) align with your activity.

  2. Submit the online funding request application form (see "Forms" below).

  3. As the Professional Development Advisory Committee (PDAC) reviews the application and deliberates, applicant prints and fills out "Pre-Authorization for Travel" (aka "PAT", see "Forms" below), obtaining signatures from their chair and/or dean/manager.

  4. Once the request for funding is approved (in full or partially), the Professional Development Coordinator will contact you to obtain your PAT to route it to the fund managers to sign

  5. Fund managers will sign off on your PAT, and will route it to the Business Services office to obtain the signature of the Vice President of Administrative Services.

  6. The PAT will be returned to your campus inbox. Please scan and save it.

  7. Enter your Travel Authorization into PeopleSoft, where you will upload your scanned PAT, along with other supporting documentation (e.g. receipts, agenda, map [for mileage], etc.).

  8. Travel!

  9. After the activity, applicants must:
    • Submit their Travel Authorization in PeopleSoft (https://myportal.sdccd.edu)
    • Submit the Funding Report (see "Forms" below) no later than two weeks after the date of the conference/activity.

Funding Priorities

Goals The purpose of this fund is to promote professional development activities which meet the goals of City College's Student Equity and Achievement goals. Highest priority is given to activities making a substantial difference in the student outcomes targeted by these goals.
Areas of Focus

(A) Increase outreach efforts and support enrollment by providing an inclusive and engaging environment through accessible instruction and exemplary support services.

(B) Increase student persistence and retention from basic skills through transfer-level courses through an integrated instruction and student services approach.

(C) Improve successful course completion rate for first-year students in order to support attainment of at least 30 college level units.

(D) Improve college-wide degree, certificate, and transfer completion rates.

(E) Reduce the gap in degree, certificate, and transfer completion rates for disproportionately impacted groups.

(F) Address curriculum redesign and student support needs arising from AB 705 requirements and efforts to achieve successful completion of transfer-level math and English in the first year.

(G) Expand the use of open educational resources or zero-cost course materials.

(H) Engage in cross-functional planning to improve processes and systems for the following areas:

  • Student entry and onboarding
  • Career and major exploration and selection
  • Articulations with high school, continuing education, and four-year programs
  • Design of program clusters
  • Program mapping and identification of pathways
  • Increased integration of instruction and student support services, including completion coaching teams and other models

Goals

These funds are allocated to community colleges to support professional development training for classified school employees to update their skills and to learn best practices.

Areas of Focus

(1) Assist faculty and administrators to improve the academic achievement of students;

(2) Ensure the curriculum frameworks and instructional materials are aligned to the common core standards;

(3) Provide training and staff development in the latest and best practices for student safety and campus safety;

(4) Provide training and staff development in management strategies and best practices regarding the use of education technology to improve student performance;

(5) Provide training and staff development in facility maintenance and operations, including new research and best practices in the operation and maintenance of school facilities, such as green technology and energy efficiency, that help reduce the use and the cost of energy at campus sites;

(6) Provide training and staff development on the best practices to meet the needs of special education students, and to comply with any new state and federal mandates; 

(7) Provide training and staff development on new research and findings for food preparation to provide nutritional meals and food management;

(8) Provide training in the management and use of state and local student data to improve student learning; and,

(9) Provide training and staff development on the latest and best practices for student health care and counseling needs.

Guidelines

  • Applicants applying for travel should exhaust all other funding sources (AB1725 for Faculty, and AFT Travel and Conference funding for Classified Professionals -- see "Other Funding Sources" below) prior to applying for PD funds.

  • Funding recipients must submit a report after their conference or other PD activity to show how they have or will incorporate what they have learned into their job and/or teaching practice, and how it will benefit the campus.

  • All regular Business Services deadlines and procedures are applicable to Professional Development Funding Requests. Applicants are responsible for knowing and observing Business Services deadlines and procedures.

  • All costs should be verified and all sources of other available funds need to be documented. If funds awarded from this pool are not used for the purpose for which they were requested, funds must be returned to the pool.

  • If the applicant is awarded funds and wishes to use them for an activity other than that for which they were awarded, the funds must be returned to the pool and a new application made for the new activity or purpose.
